14 Feb When Making Babies is About More Than Just the Birds & the Bees
So you’re keen for a little one. Way to go. But before you begin cranking things up for baby-making, let’s be sure you’ve got some foundational factors in place first.
Infertility issues are on the rise: one in six couples struggle to conceive and approximately 1/4 of all pregnancies result in miscarriage.
And perhaps you’ve been there. You’ve tried and tried. And tried again. And now, even the thought of trying makes your heart sink and your tummy turn. Or maybe you’re one of the 1 in 4 women who’s gone through the trauma of miscarriage. Maybe you carry with you the grief, coupled with confusion, as to what could actually be going on?
The Causes of Infertility & Miscarriage include:
- Ovulatory factors, including PCOS
- Tubal Damage
- Male issues
- And the most common cause? ‘Unexplained’
That basically means that even after thorough investigations, doctors can’t pinpoint an identifiable or specific medical problem for the infertility.
So that’s where I step in.

Where to Begin when Addressing Infertility?
By appreciating that ain’t nobody got taiiime for a one-size fits all approach. We’re all incredibly different. And any natural plan for infertility, needs to be adjusted to suit your individual needs. But we’ll chat about the basics here.
(Speaking about time, it’s important to remember that both immature eggs – also known as oocytes – and sperm, take approximately 3 months to mature & develop, ready for ovulation & ejaculation, respectively. So give yourselves a 3 month prep period prior to conceiving.)
Adopt a Diet
We’re talking including fruit & veg, phytoestrogens, fibre and wild caught oily fish & grass fed meat – with as much of it as possible being organic – and avoiding sugar, additives, preservatives & artificial sweeteners. (Basically, moving away from a processed diet to whole food intake).
Avoid the Alcohol:
Now I know this can be a tricky one, but with a bubsy as the end goal, perhaps it’ll keep you both motivated? Because the long & short of it: the more you drink, the less likely you are to conceive. Alcohol causes a decrease in sperm count and an increase in abnormal sperm. It also interferes with the absorption of various nutrients such as zinc – one of the most important minerals for male fertility.
Zap the Xenooestrogens
These are ‘foreign’ oestrogen-like chemicals particularly from pesticides or plastics. They’re stored in body fat and affect men & women differently. So, steering away from plastic bottles, containers & cling wrap is a great start (and the environment thinks so too!). And please, don’t heat these in the microwave either.
Amongst other things, chronic stress can lead to a phenomenon known as the “cortisol steal” which can then send hormones completely out of whack. Not helpful when having a baby is the aim of the game.
Gauging what’s going on with your hormones and nutrient levels is really helpful for guiding the best course of action when wanting to get pregnant.
Step Aside for the Supplements
Yes, supplements are necessary. Because even the most swanky diet in the world might not have enough nutrients to give you the best chance of conceiving. Some supplements that are most beneficial for doing that include:
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin C
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids
- L-Arginine & L-Carnitine
